In the town of Toowoomba, a place surrounded by beautiful bushland and rugged ranges, sits a special timber cabin. It is here, for over 30 years that three kids, Paul, Amanda and David Guard grew up with a backyard playground beyond most children’s imagination.

This backyard consists of 12 acres of bushland, rivers and camping sites. Three tree houses made with pride and love still stand strong years after they were built and years after the children have grown up and moved away.

The house, an A-frame cabin built by the Guards in their beloved Swedish style, sits proudly atop a hill where it overlooks the surrounding valley. Over time, the kids grew up and moved out; the carpet aged and faded; spaces were unutilised and views become closed off due to the ever-growing bush land.

Shockingly in 2014, Paul, Amanda and David’s parents were tragically killed in the MH17 Malaysian Airlines tragedy. What an emotional struggle it must have been to decide to sell their family home of 30 years.

With gentle hands and genuine respect, it was time to help start a new chapter for the Guard family by updating this precious property and moving it into a new family’s hands for more stories to be written and new adventures to be had.

Interior

Shaynna had two main living areas to work with. Upstairs, soft new carpet and lounge suites were installed. To help combat the Queensland heat, ceiling fans were installed along with new Luxaflex Roller Blinds with Transparent fabric. The incoming sun in to the lounge was harsh and blinding, so the dark Night Sky fabric of the roller blinds played a huge part in creating a comfortable and inviting family space.

Dual Roller Blinds with Sunscreen/Blockout fabric were the choice for the bedrooms and office, giving power to have the ultimate level of control against the rooms exposed to the Queensland sun. The front Blockout roller blind offered night time privacy and room darkening capabilities, while the back Sunscreen roller helped to reduce glare while retaining a view to the outside. The Luxaflex Fabric Collection provides many choices for colour, texture, opacity, trims, operating methods and durability. Different opacities can be teamed together in different rooms to suit unique light, heat and privacy requirements.

Downstairs the kitchen, dining and lounge areas were quite segregated. So by removing a wall, Shaynna created a more open plan living and galley style kitchen, which created a sense of space of comfort. Flat pack kitchen cabinetry was installed along with a timber kitchen benchtop, to tie in with the warmth of the timber house.

The timber flooring was stripped back and polished to compliment the A-frame lodge look. And the striking view and wrap around deck needed easier access, so new bushfire rated bifold doors were installed. The timber flooring coupled with the clean colours of the roller blinds brought freshness to the spaces. The Sunscreen back roller blinds were able to add a soft glow to the office and bedrooms, improving the working atmosphere and the overall standard of the house.

Exterior

The house and property had great opportunities for Charlie to enhance the already exciting outdoor areas.

New paint and gorgeous outdoor furniture enhanced the decking. But the biggest changes happened poolside.  Several large trees were cleverly removed to open up a perfect area to extend the pool deck and lay some turf.

Old bricks were used to define a path which leads to the front entrance. The property was transformed, while keeping the distinct woodland retreat feel.
